Most people want a better life, one that is more successful, more pleasant, simpler or more enlightened. A life that encompasses all the good things we want to experience. But most people will not reach that goal for two simple reasons. One is that they do not have a concise plan on how they will accomplish this change and the other is that they do not have the discipline or the courage to follow through with their plan…if they had one. Yes, it sounds harsh, but it is an accurate statement.

A good life does not just happen, it is created. This new life is created by making a specific plan of action that encompasses the steps one needs to take to reach specific goals. Then by being proactive in reaching those goals. For each of us, the bottom line is, it is your choice. Your choice to continue to live in a mediocre life style or to take charge and make the changes needed to create your personal utopia. Whining, complaining and wishing life could be better will not get you there. It will only keep you feeling miserable and make those around you more miserable by listening to your negativity. If you are unhappy with your life as you are experiencing it today, then do something about. Do something that will result in taking you to where you really want to be.

I will not say that it will be easy, because it will not. But if the goal is realistic, is planned out to a step-by-step procedure and you have the fortitude to reach your dream, you will reach it. Guaranteed.

Steps to Creating:

Dare to dream.

When we were young, our dreams painted the world for us. We felt as though we could do anything and change the world. As we progressed through life, we replaced those dreams with the reality of school, work and raising a family. We became automated to life, each day the same as the last and life transgressed from idealization to mundane rhetoric. We need those dreams to return, to fuel the fires of enthusiasm, of fulfillment and to grow.

Write out specific goals.

Reaching your dreams means to sit quietly, reflect what is truly important to you and to write these sequences of goals as a road map. Where do you want to be in 1 year? Or in 5 years? How will you reach these markers? What steps do you need to take to achieve your goals? Write them down. Writing down your goals keeps them visually active and having a much better chance to become reality.

Dealing with the challenges.

Most of us live in an automated world. We sleep, go to work, eat and do it all over again, day by day. Many people have become so used to this robotic lifestyle, the idea that life can improve by making changes is a scary concept. They are so comfortable being miserable that the idea of improvement is just a pipe-dream and that life will become uncomfortable, they never attempt to make those changes. You need to become energized with those dreams you own and by doing so, you will begin to empower yourself to success.

Define your battle plan.

With pen in hand and paper to write on, create an easy to follow and realistic road map to where you want to go. By taking small steps you will not be overwhelmed by the process of mapping out your route. Define each step with as much information you require to where you want to be. Keep it realistic, keep it simple and keep it in motion and little by little, you will begin to experience a successful transformation.

Become pro-active.

This is the hard part. You have spent time reflecting on your personal manifest destiny, now you have to actively make those changes by following the road map you have just completed. With your map in hand, you have a clear direction to follow. So pull yourself up, build an energized attitude and go for it. If you miss reaching a goal, re-evaluate and try again. There is no such thing as failure, just lessons learned.

Celebrate the successes.

One of those little human idiosyncrasies we own is the inability to honestly and genuinely pat ourselves on the back. Yes, when we succeed at a task, we feel good about our accomplishments. Go one step further. Celebrate those goals reached by doing something nice for you. A relaxing massage, a fine dinner out, a vacation or whatever you enjoy doing.

So, now you have an idea of what you need to do to create your new and brighter world. Just remember that it is the journey and not the destination that will create the deepest and most promising changes.

We all know people who can wake up each morning with a smile on their faces and laughter in their hearts.  Always ready with a compliment or a friendly greeting.  For me, those people irritate the hell out of me.  It isn’t normal to climb out of a warm bed and face another mundane day.  Hell, it isn’t normal to jump out of a warm bed and face any day.

So, what is this thing called happiness?  Does it have its foundation based on environment or attitude?  Or is it plainly an electrical or chemical synapses that either fires like a well tuned Ferrari engine or one that misfires like my truck on every third rotation?  I understand that we all have moments of enlightened joy, but they are fleeting at best.  Being one that is not content with the mundane, I have attempted to find out what happiness really is, if it really exists at all, or whether a well accepted contentment with life is nothing more than a cop-out for not having true happiness. Maybe in finding this truth, I can fabricate a genuine happy pill, sell the formula for millions and retire to some deserted island in the South Pacific….  One can always dream.

After researching everything that is supposed to create happiness and I will say that there are many opinions, lists, how-to’s, medications and self-help books, I think I can reduce it down to this proverb and my way of thinking.

If you want happiness for an hour — take a nap.
If you want happiness for a day — go fishing.
If you want happiness for a year — inherit a fortune.
If you want happiness for a lifetime — help someone else.

Find what is most important to you and eliminate the rest.
Look beyond your senses and remember to never underestimate your dreams.
Never leave unfinished business.

As we progress through life’s endeavors, we all have the concept that our major goal in life is to reach a certain level, based on our individual definition for “quality of life or happiness in life.”  There is only one simple problem to this end and that is what we delineate as quality or happiness.  The words and the concept are subjective within themselves, but based on a criteria of an individual’s character, their surrounding influences, and a measurable grade of worth.  What is unimportant to one person maybe be a crucial element for another in attaining one’s happiness.

There are some myths surrounding the elevated state of being happy.  Happiness is not a specific destination, nor is it a calculated set point along life’s highway but a mindset and a journey of self knowledge.  It is how you react to outside influences by cultivating resilience and strength of your character.  In essence, you are what you feel.  We have very little control in our individual lives, but the one major component that we own is our ability to control how we feel.

As I suggested previously, happiness is a state of mind characterized by contentment, love, satisfaction, and pleasure. This state of mind is a diversity of different abstractions of biological, psychological, religious, and philosophical approaches to our existence.  Is it measurable?  Let’s see.
