I don’t know, but watching the liberal news media presenting reports of political strife around the world, economic instability, massive unemployment and useless politicians wringing their hands and passing the buck over government’s lack of common sense and epidemic spinelessness, I begin to understand why so many people in this country are not only pissed off, but are preparing for crisis mode.
Until recently, if you labeled someone a “survivalist” one did so with tongue in cheek and with a negative connotation. One imagined Rambo types hunkering down in remote places, ready to shoot anyone who stumbled on to their property. Camouflage, high-powered weapons, and the stockpiling of food and goods. Creepy….though logical today.
So what has changed? First of all, the title “survivalist” is politically incorrect. Too many past semantics for the new “Preppers” to handle. Yes, that is what they are called now. Preppers. I don’t know if I like this title or not. It does fall in line with: hippies, groupies, yuppies and other such designations, but falls flat when stood next to those Rambo types.
I spent some time researching the new “prepper” mentality and was amazed by the numbers that have taken to this concept of preparing. But preparing for what though? December 21, 2012? or a complete breakdown of society? Or for emergency weather conditions such as what happened with the blizzard that hit the East Coast last month? It all depends on what your present perception is to global problems. All you have to do is pick your favorite Armageddon scenario. No, I am not making fun of the survivalist..oops..prepper mindset. Actually, I have been thinking this way long before the movement morphed from surviving to prepping.
But here’s lays the problem. Though many people are realizing that preparing for an emergency, whether it is short-term or long-term, stockpiling all the goods you need to make it through a crisis they need to realize one important factor. Your mental stamina will be your most important tool and I do not believe many people have taken the psychological part of this seriously. Now is the time to do so.
Another impending problem is that the illustrious US government (specifically the FBI) is now labeling anyone who takes the precaution of stockpiling goods as potential terrorists. I find this incredible. Incredibly sickening. This is just another validation of where the direction the government is headed. Can anyone say “Control”?
Anyway, for those who still might be interested in the concept of preparing for emergencies, I have included a few websites that will get you started and for those who feel that nothing will ever happen, this false safety mentality is called the “Normalcy bias” and you can click here to read more.

Good post Ryeder, you are quite the writer but I’m sure you know that. Thanks for another good post. May your next be more of the same top notch quality… -Heidi
Now I am embarrassed….lol…thank you, Heide and you have a great Thanksgiving
I am thankful that thanksgiving is OVER, those who have bad family tend to not stomach this time of year very well…I am so thankful to be here reading your words like we’re sitting on the porch watching the landscape live and breathe…that kind of escape from the real family…THAT I am thankful for…You give me the perfect spot to do that…the sweetness of your company is much better than my mother’s pumpkin pie. Hope you had a better turkey day than I…(dont worry I’m better now, front porch time with friends eases leftover tentions) -Heidi
Thank you Heidi. Glad to hear the leftovers have settled. I know your words. I see these situations almost daily and it is sad. But these situations are perpetuated by individual choices and will not be solved until all involved find a middle ground. Only then can one find peace of mind and spirit. My turkey day was like any other day. I do not celebrate genocide with turkey genocide…lol…Dave
Yes, it shows what we need to know.
Yes, it does but getting people to realize this is the battle. Knowledge is power and the way it seems, there is much weakness in the world..Thanks for stopping by
Just hold on Ryeder, the strong are close at hand, we have just been resting up a bit before the final battle arrives!! Don’t lose faith just yet, my friend…
I knew I liked you, you have a heart for the poor defenseless turkey! THAATS a real man!…I don’t like foul, duck, goose, turkey…I think it’s all gross to eat, I don’t like chicken or eggs either…oh, wait, sorry, I hate all food so I guess I’m not a good one to rally beside,lol.. You did pause a moment to celebrate the sentiment, yes? I hope someone let you know that for all the good you do there is a thankful nation out there because of it. I have said B4…I am thankful you found me and reached out to tell me I’m not crazy, although now I bet you’re wondering what you were thinkin…lol…
Juz sayin’..-Caroline
Glad to hear the warriors are just laying low…they will be needed. Yes, I did pause for a short moment than give thanks for those gifts I do have. No, I still know you are not crazy….lol
ps. I did catch the comment on your thoughts of what the thanksgiving holiday is all about, I get that, I do…Most modern holidays are nothing like what they started out as, so few truly understand the traditions behind their traditions…I still think that one can choose to pause with the rest and be thankful as that is the meaning the spirit needs to see in the celebration…I hope you received refreshment on a spiritual level as well as a knowledge that there are ppl. in the world who are thankful for you as well as what you do and say…-Caroline
Thank you again for your kind words. I did get plenty of rest and I did give thanks. I am spiritually refreshed every time I work with youth (I work as a CD counselor) and help them find a path towards their dreams…
I assumed you worked or work with youth, you are perfect for that path as it is comforting to hang with you in this laid-back atmosphere you creat around you, I would bet the kiddos you work with feel the same as I. I am glad you are not cynical as some of the jaded world has become, that you can be thankful and give thanks and that you allow others to be thankful of you…the last part being sometimes harder than the first…that makes you a true blessing.-Caroline
The other day, while I was at work, my sister stole my iphone and tested to see if it can survive a 30 foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation. My apple ipad is now destroyed and she has 83 views. I know this is totally off topic but I had to share it with someone!
Only 83 views…that sucks…I would toss the sister…lol…thanks for sharing
