Here it is, the first week in October, and I am sitting here watching the third snow storm in less than a week. Overall, I think that there were only 2 winter seasons that I had the opportunity to ride out the cold, blustery winds, and bask in the semi-warmth of Florida. And to be completely honest, I did not enjoy it as much as I thought I would. It was different, almost surreal.
I have also had the opportunity to go to the other extreme of the seasonal spectrum. I spent a year in the Arctic wastelands of Greenland. Though I was used to the New England (Maine) winters, I can honestly say that I had never experienced, nor will I ever experience the frigid, mind numbing cold of Arctic winter. I can also say that I never experienced, nor will I ever experience again the vivid beauty that the aurora borealis displayed during those very long nights. I remember many nights that these multi-colored lights danced overhead in the polar skies, casting it’s colors on the frozen tundra. A twisting, turning, radiating light show that Hollywood special effects will never match. And so, I sit here, watching the snow drift down to cover a still unfroze ground, and know that the cold will not be all that difficult to handle.
